Can you help us make Phase 2 of the Warren Nelson Bog a Reality?
Early in 2015, friends of Warren Nelson and members of Friends of Sax-Zim Bog came together to honor the life of Warren Nelson, a passionate birder and photographer, through the purchase of a 40 acre mature black spruce bog in the Sax-Zim Bog Important Bird Area. A HEARTY THANK YOU! to those who donated.
UPDATE ON WARREN NELSON MEMORIAL BOG
We’ve had time to explore the area, discovering numerous bog wildflowers such as Pink Ladyslippers, Bog Solomon’s Seal, and Goldthread and listening to the songs of Nashville Warblers, Winter Wrens, drumming of Black-backed Woodpeckers and even watching a Moose browse across the road.
In July 2016, a major windstorm swept down many trees like pick-up sticks along the roadside. We salvaged the logs and then planted 200 Tamarack and Black Spruce seedlings.
BOG BOARDWALK IS PHASE 2
Now we have the opportunity to continue Warren’s legacy of passing on his love of birds and bogs by constructing a 900’ BOG BOARDWALK so visitors to the area can experience the magic and wonder of walking through a bog, without getting their feet wet, getting lost or breaking an ankle!
We have ordered materials and will be working on it during October and November. We hope to complete the project in February of 2018.
